Location: Oak Lawn, Illinois

The Challenge

Project at a glance

  • Client: Oak Lawn Park District, Oak Lawn, Illinois
  • Year: 2026
  • Area: a solarium, 72 glass panels, about 1,260 square feet
  • Problem: heat and glare in the solarium, and old window film that was failing
  • Work: removal of the old film and installation of new film
  • Film: Panorama Slate 10

A solarium is built to let in as much sun as possible, which also makes it one of the hardest rooms in a building to keep comfortable. The Oak Lawn Park District’s solarium already had window film, but the existing film was deteriorating and needed replacement. The park district wanted the new film to provide strong heat and glare reduction.

The Solution

AAA Glass Tint removed the old, failing film from all 72 solarium panels, prepared the glass and installed Panorama Slate 10, about 1,260 square feet in total. AAA Glass Tint is a Panorama authorized dealer.

Slate 10 is a dark, dual-reflective film made for strong heat and glare control. Solar Gard’s published figures, on 1/4 inch single clear glass compared with the same glass without film:

  • Total solar energy rejected: 76 percent, against 18 percent without film
  • Solar heat gain coefficient: 0.24, against 0.82 without film
  • Glare reduction: 86 percent
  • Visible light transmitted: 13 percent, against 89 percent without film
  • Ultraviolet light blocked: more than 99 percent
  • Fade reduction: 88 percent

On 1/4 inch double clear (insulated) glass, Solar Gard lists 64 percent total solar energy rejected, against 30 percent without film, and 85 percent glare reduction. Like any film, Slate 10 was checked against the manufacturer’s film to glass guidance before installation.

We do not subcontract installation; our own crews do the work.

The Result

The deteriorating film is gone, and all 72 panels now carry new Slate 10 to cut the sun’s heat and glare. Later in 2026 the Oak Lawn Park District hired AAA Glass Tint again for another window film project.

Conclusion

Questions about this project

Can old window film be removed and replaced? Yes. On this project we removed the old, failing film from 72 solarium panels, prepared the glass and installed new film.

How much heat does Slate 10 block? Solar Gard rates it at 76 percent total solar energy rejected on 1/4 inch single clear glass and 64 percent on 1/4 inch double clear glass. Actual results depend on the glass, the direction it faces and the building.

Will a dark film make the room dim? Darker, yes: Slate 10 lets through 13 percent of visible light on 1/4 inch single clear glass, which is what cuts the glare. It suits a sun-filled room like a solarium, where the light is too strong. At night, with the lights on inside, people outside can see in more easily; see Does Privacy Window Film Work at Night?

What do the ratings mean? We explain total solar energy rejected, glare reduction and the other ratings in our window film performance terms guide.
