Glass doors and sidelights are often the most exposed part of a school entrance. Unprotected glass can be broken through quickly, so the goal of school safety film is to keep the glass in the opening and add time before an intruder can get through.

School safety film is a clear film applied to existing glass. When the glass breaks, the film holds the fragments together. When the filmed glass is attached to the frame with a structural silicone, it helps delay forced entry. AAA Glass Tint does not treat film without an attachment as a security system.

How School Safety Film Works and Where It's Installed

  • Security film is typically applied to the interior surface of door glass, sidelights and ground-floor windows, and its adhesive is designed to hold broken glass fragments to the film.
  • When intrusion delay is the goal, the filmed glass is attached to the frame, typically with a four sided wet glaze of DOWSIL 995 structural silicone, so the broken glazing is more likely to remain in the opening. See Security Film Attachment Systems Explained.
  • The existing glass can remain in place, so replacement glazing is not required.
  • Clear security film keeps visibility and natural light.
  • The attachment silicone is soft when first installed, which is one reason we schedule entrance work when students are not present.

School Safety Film Applications: What Gets Filmed and Why

Entrance doors and sidelights. Controlled entrances are usually the first priority in a school glass assessment because they are the most accessible and the most visible. With an attachment, security film helps delay entry through entrance glass while lockdown and response procedures take effect.

Classroom door glass and corridor windows. Film on interior glass helps keep broken glass in place and reduces the hazard from flying glass.

Ground-floor perimeter windows. Especially relevant for single-story buildings, portable classrooms and facilities with little natural surveillance.

How much does commercial window film cost?

As of October 2026, commercial window film projects can range from the low thousands of dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. The ranges overlap because price depends on much more than square footage, including the film and system, security attachment, access equipment, removal of existing film, prevailing wage and other labor or scheduling requirements. Will window film crack my glass or void my window warranty?

Proper film selection greatly reduces the risk of thermal stress breakage, but no installer can guarantee that glass will never break. Manufacturers publish film-to-glass guidance showing which films are approved for different glass types and when written approval is required. The film manufacturer's warranty may include glass breakage or seal failure coverage when its requirements are met. The original window manufacturer's warranty is separate, and aftermarket film may affect that warranty depending on the manufacturer's terms.
