The Challenge

Project at a glance

  • Client: Advocate Sherman Hospital, Elgin, Illinois
  • Scope: more than 80 separate window film installations
  • Areas: hallways, patient and treatment rooms, offices, consult rooms, waiting areas, diagnostic areas and a surgical corridor
  • Goals: privacy, a calmer look, and custom designs on the glass
  • Films: frosted films, SOLYX patterned decorative films and custom cut designs

AAA Glass Tint has completed more than 80 separate window film installations at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin. A hospital has a lot of interior and exterior glass, and much of it needs some privacy: hallways that look into courtyards and across to patient floors, room doors, consult rooms and offices. The hospital also wanted the glass to look good, not just covered. Requests came one area at a time, often a single door or a few panels, as departments asked for them.

The Solution

AAA Glass Tint designed, cut and installed custom decorative and privacy window film at Advocate Sherman Hospital. Across more than 80 separate installations, we matched the film to each space, from plain frosted privacy for an office door to custom graphics running the length of a hallway. Because we handle both the design and the installation, each design can be fitted to the hospital’s own glass and approved before any film is cut.

  • Custom designed hallways: in 2017 AAA Glass Tint designed a custom graphic for 24 hallway windows, the hospital approved it, and we cut and installed it in SOLYX Dusted Leaf patterned film. In 2018 we designed and installed a second hallway, 26 windows of frosted film with a custom design, 48 inches high.
  • Decorative privacy: patterned SOLYX films, including Dusted Leaf on room doors and Cut Glass Crystal on a Cancer Center door and sidelite, and frosted panels with grass and wheat designs.
  • Plain privacy: white frost and Solar Gard Clear Frost on offices, consult rooms, work rooms, storage areas and individual doors, from a single panel to full office fronts.

The designs leave clear lines and open glass at the top, so daylight and some view remain while the frosted or patterned film screens the view at eye level. AAA Glass Tint is an authorized SOLYX dealer and a Solar Gard authorized dealer. We do not subcontract installation; our own crews do the work.

The Result

Hallways, rooms and offices across the hospital now have privacy film, much of it decorative or custom designed rather than plain frost. The hospital kept bringing AAA Glass Tint back for more than 80 separate installations, from single doors to full hallways, with the treatment matched to each space rather than the same film everywhere.

Conclusion

Questions about this project

Can window film have a custom design? Yes. At Advocate Sherman Hospital, AAA Glass Tint designed the graphics for two hallways, the hospital approved them, and we cut and installed them in patterned and frosted film.

Does frosted film still let light in? Yes. Frosted and patterned films are translucent: they blur the view but pass daylight. Designs with clear areas, like the ones here, keep even more light and some view.

Does frosted film give privacy at night? Frosted and patterned films obscure the view in both directions, day and night, unlike reflective films. See Does Privacy Window Film Work at Night?

Can film be added one room at a time? Yes. Many of the projects at this hospital were a single door or a few panels, added as each department needed them.

Where else does window film help in a hospital? Privacy at patient and staff glass, pharmacy windows, and work planned around patient care. See Window Film for Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities.
