The Challenge

Project at a glance

  • Client: City of Naperville, Municipal Center, Naperville, Illinois
  • Year: 2024
  • Areas: second-floor glass doors and sidelights, 16 panels; two lobby panels
  • Problem: clear glass doors and sidelights into second-floor employee areas needed privacy
  • Work: frosted privacy film on the second floor (April 2024); in a separate project, existing lobby film removed and replaced (March 2024)
  • Films: frosted privacy film; Solar Gard Sterling 50 in the lobby

The second floor of the Naperville Municipal Center has all-glass doors and sidelights leading into employee areas. The city’s logo and “Restricted Area, Employees Only” lettering were already on the corridor side of the glass, but the glass itself was clear, so the work areas behind it were in full view. The city needed privacy at those entrances without replacing the glass or the doors.

The Solution

AAA Glass Tint installed frosted privacy film on 16 second-floor door and sidelight panels. The film went on the inside face of the glass, so the city’s existing logos and lettering on the corridor face stayed in place and now read clearly against the frosted background.

Frosted film is translucent: it blurs the view in both directions, day and night, and still passes daylight. A person standing right at the glass may show as a soft silhouette. We explain how frosted film compares with reflective privacy film in Does Privacy Window Film Work at Night?

In a separate 2024 project at the Municipal Center, AAA Glass Tint removed the existing window film from two lobby panels and replaced it with Solar Gard Sterling 50. We do not subcontract installation; our own crews did both jobs.

The Result

The second-floor entrances now screen the employee areas from the corridor while keeping light in the space, and the city’s logos and signage stand out on the frosted glass. The City of Naperville has hired AAA Glass Tint for other window film work at the Municipal Center and other city buildings, including the Fire Department administration building in 2025.

Conclusion

Questions about this project

Can privacy film go on glass that already has lettering or a logo? Yes. At the Naperville Municipal Center the logos were on the corridor face of the glass, so we installed the frosted film on the inside face and left the graphics as they were.

Does frosted film give privacy at night? Yes. Unlike reflective privacy film, frosted film keeps blurring the view whichever side of the glass is brighter. People standing close to the glass may still show as silhouettes.

Does frosted film block daylight? Frosted film lets natural light through while blocking direct views. How much light it passes depends on the film selected.

Can old window film be replaced? Yes. In the Municipal Center lobby we removed the existing film and installed Solar Gard Sterling 50.
